ARTIST MATERIALS AND PRODUCTION METHODS

Rosalie Gascoigne
'Love Apples' 1992
retro-reflective road signs on plywood
128.3x106.6 cm1.

As poets and writers use words to portray their message to their audience, Gascoigne has used a variety of retro-reflective signs that 'vary slightly in colour from: red, dull orange and gold'2. to portray her message. By applying these retro-reflective signs that vary in colour on plywood, the different colour retro-reflective signs under light would add another dimension to the artwork and the way Gascoigne has added texture to the artwork which is not clearly evident in the picture, I'm sure if see the artwork in person, it would appear that some of the retro-reflective signs were sticking out further than others which combine to help achieve Gascoigne's main goal:

"to come at things obliquely so as to catch out their thingliness"2

Fiona Hall
'Medicine Bundles for the non-born child' 1993-94
aluminum, rubber teats child's jacket (28x44x10cm), child's bonnet (13x13x7cm), child's teething ring (31x9cm) diameter1.

Fiona Hall's artwork,'Medicine Bundles for the non-born child' at first, looks like a bunch of scrap metal put together to form an artwork which it actually is but with a further meaning behind the coke cans. Although this artwork is made from recycled coke cans by interweaving each other, its main message is not about the environment but instead 'explores the appropriation knowledge from third world societies and, most importantly, the future of the world's children'2.
Finally the use of rubber nipples on the coke cans, 'addresses notions of nurturing within our consumer society, referencing Coca-Cola as a symbol of plant degradation and cultural imperialism'
